If there's one thing that sets EuroCycler apart from other multisport vacation providers, it's the chance to ride with and learn from top bicycling and triathlon coaches. Our staff includes noted professionals with a range of experience including sports physiology, endurance training, race coaching, sports nutrition and more. Certain coaches are assigned to specific weeks depending on the training focus and their particular area of expertise (Cycling, Triathlon, Women's Clinic, Beergarden).
Dan Maker, United Kingdom
Dan is the English version of the all-around sports guy. Originally an avid snowboarder, he started cycling by accident in 1992 when he joined a club ride using the mountain bike he'd just been talked into by a friend. Instantly hooked, he began his cycling career and in rather short order found himself competing in amateur and elite events internationally. For a couple of years, he spent all his time competing in Normandy, gathering up more than 50 top 3 placements and 25 race wins in a show of friendly English competition. Now married to a the woman he loves just slightly more than his bike, and the father of two delightful children, Dan still puts in his paces on the bike and spends enough time on a snowboard to be a world-class instructor. With years of teaching experience, natural cycling talent and a healthy dose of English wit, Dan is one of EuroCycler's most popular ride leaders.
Jono Rumbelow, United Kingdom
Jono grew up in South Africa. He was a boarder at a small farming school in Ixopo (Kwa-Zulu Natal), and was soon exposed to all types of sport. He excelled at most of them but it was his speed and endurance that came to the fore on the athletics track and during x-country events. Sport was in his blood and after a short stint behind a desk doing an admin job, he soon realised that there was more to life.
He started triathlon in 1989 after a bet with a friend and was instantly successful going on to represented South Africa as an athlete and coach of the National Duathlon Team. Since then he has not looked back and has gone on to complete 2 Personal Trainer Diploma’s, 3 Spin Instructor qualifications, a Life Saving instructors qualification, a Level 1 Swim Instructors qualification, a Lower Limb Biomechanics qualification and a British Triathlon Federation Level 2 Coaches qualification.
Jono has been involved in coaching for 12 years now while still competing and has coach numerous age group and elite athletes during that time. He run’s his own Biomechanics clinic in Kingston-upon-Thames and is a full time coach. His wife has helped him understand the link between training and family life and being a father to 1 (soon to be three).
Jono’s style of coaching is one of making sure that your training compliments your current lifestyle. You still want your family and friends right! In his role as EuroCycler's coach during our triathlon weeks in Spain, Jono will guide each triathlon guest with individual training advice based on those work, family and social commitments while still allowing you to achieve your needs, goals and desires.
Olaf Sabatschus, Germany
Born 1971 in Cologne, Germany, Olaf is a married man, father and triathlete of extraordinary experience and ability. His athletic career began in earnest in 1987 and over the past ten years he achieved numerous top ten finishes in Hawaii, Austria, Canada, Japan, UK and many others, including two consecutive victories at IronMan-Brazil in 04 and 05.
Naturally a very strong runner, Olaf’s strength as a triathlete today stems from disciplined training, experience, a balanced lifestyle and his mental power to succeed. During his athletic career Olaf studied nutrition science and even there he was ahead of the pack: he turned in his final theses three terms before completing the masters degree. Today, Olaf is well known among triathletes, runners and fitness-conscious amateurs as a sports nutrition expert thanks to his frequent publications. His is not among the world’s tallest triathletes, topping just 5’8”. But as a package of power and a bike position not easily imitated, his friends nicknamed him “the monster” – and many know him as one of the best clients of ColdStone Creamery.
Over the past 4 years Olaf Sabatschus has dedicated part of his time to supporting triathlon communities. His ability eloquently to share his endurance training experiences contributes to his increasing reputation and public persona. He is an active triathlon coach. He uses a strong nutrition focus in his coaching and works with athletes around the world at all levels of ability.
In his role as EuroCycler's coach during our triathlon weeks in Spain in spring, Olaf will guide each triathlon guest with individual training advice based on his philosophy of coaching for efficiency and power. This means: geared to optimise time, given that the typical guest is an age-group triathlete or cyclist with job and family to balance. You will learn from Olaf how to race even at a top professional level with fewer than 15 hours of training per week.
Richard Debrot, Switzerland
Born and raised at the foot of the scenic Swiss Alps, Richard could basically pursue one of two directions in life: 1) become a world-class skier, cyclist and all-around adventure sports guy, or 2) learn how to yodel and make really good chocolate. Richard chose the path of great resistance. An athlete with in-depth cycling experience, Richard has competed both in MTB and road races, time trials and triathlons all over Europe and America. In between races, he found time to become a chemical engineer, earn a Kellogg MBA and launch EuroCycler. Over the past 10 years, Richard has personally led cycling groups throughout the US and Europe, including Sonoma and Napa Valley, Spain, the Swiss Alps and of course, the Tour de France. In spite of his Swiss neutrality, Richard takes a decisive position on sunscreen, hydration and bike handling skills. You will feel the confidence and experience of his leadership throughout the trip as he does what he does best - supervise, organize and orchestrate.
Colin Lewis, United Kingdom
Simply put, Colin Lewis is THE British cycling legend. As former Tour de France racer, he knows the peleton since the mid sixties when he rode alongside his team leader and roommate Tom Simpson who has literally ridden himself to death near the summit of Mt. Ventoux. He also rode flanked by Eddy Merckx and has seen many other big names come and go, while he is still very active and in shape that stuns most twenty-something riders. With so much legacy, Colin is one of Britain's most experienced and knowledgeable coaches, also raced at the Olympics in Tokyo and was twice British Professional Champion with over 38 victories. Today, Colin lives with his wife Pam in Devon, the South West of England where he is also president of the Mid-Devon Cycling Club. He has helped many young riders to achieve their ambitions and the Club is currently represented on the professional cycling circuit. We are very proud to have Colin on the EuroCycler team and available as a bicycling encyclopedia. You can learn from his memoirs and enjoy his anecdotes firsthand on our trips. Colin rides with us at the Tour de France 2007 and as of March 2008 he will be coaching our road cyclists and triathletes at the EuroCycler Spring Training camps in Spain.
Denny De Priest, USA and Germany
An American in Europe. After a wealth of experience garnered in the United States, Denny De Priest furthers his coaching career in Europe and moved to Germany early 2006. In his coaching approach, Denny lives to help athletes exceed their perceived performance limits and takes on the challenge to bring them to their next athletic level. He knows from his own experience that it is possible and having pursued academic studies in biomechanics and exercise science, he understands enough about what the human body can do, to expect more. Denny De Priest starts his first season coaching with EuroCycler and brings to the program a wealth of competitive coaching experience at national and world class level. He spent two years at the Olympic Training Center, Colorado Springs, coaching for USA Triathlon with emphasis on the under 23 age group, and also coached the elite team for their ITU world champion long course. He is one of only a handful USAT Level III coaches and also finished several long-distance triathlon and marathon events.
In his role at EuroCycler during the triathlon weeks in Spain , Denny will find and test the limits of each triathlon guest – guiding, pushing and encouraging our athletes over their individual performance obstacles. You can expect as much in results form this training as Denny will expect from you. And if you like it, you can choose to continue to be coached by him, and go far beyond your experience with us in Spain and make the race season your ultimate athletic success.
Jack Kershaw, United Kingdom
With Jack, we're talking pro cycling. Jack is a former member of Great Britain's Olympic Squad and a professional cyclist for more than 10 years. He raced alongside Phil Ligget and shared the podium with him. Jack has first hand experience in getting people over difficult climbs, having pushed star pro's such as 9-time TdF stage winner Barry Hoban over many mountains. He'll share a lot of tips and anecdotes from his life as a pro cyclist.
Today, Jack is a full time electrician at the Royal Oldham Hospital, near Manchester. Over time, his passion for cycling has evolved into Triathlon which is now his sport of choice. His athletic goal each year is to defend his national ITU age group title. He's also well-acquainted with Noosa, the Australian SuperBase for triathletes. Jack will lead ride groups during our trip in Spain and he will use his unique expertise to ensure proper bike fit and on-the-road maintenance for EuroCycler guests.
Andrea Brede, Germany
German born Andrea Brede didn't discover her multi-sport skills until she became an Au-Pair in 1998. No, it wasn't juggling a dozen toddlers that constituted multi-sport. It was the year she filled in as a swimmer for a relay triathlon team in Memphis, TN. The joy she found in this first team competition inspired her to pursue triathlon once she returned to Germany. Andrea finished her studies in sports-sciences at the University of Cologne with majors in economy and management, joined a triathlon team and gradually improved her results over numerous short distance races.
A few years later in 2004, she became intrigued by the IronMan distance. Not shy or lacking confidence, Andrea signed up for IronMan Austria and finished 2nd, on her first ever IronMan. This performance was reason enough to commit to a professional triathlon career. In the same year she also showed the world that she had earned her place in the stable of German powerhouse athletes by winning the German Middle-Distance Championship. A 2nd place at IM-Lanzarote qualified her for the worlds 2005 in Kona which she finished 21st. And in 2006? She won the European IronMan Championship! So watch out next time you meet an Au-Pair, she might leave you in the dust in no time.
At EuroCycler's camp in Spain, it is Andrea from whom our female athletes will have personal opportunities to learn. Andrea will lead the women's clinic discussions, share her training insights and show the campers how she prepares for her season and upcoming races, including Kona.
She'll do whatever she can to challenge your game just as long as her cycling shoes don't get wet!
Bex Hopkins, United Kingdom
Bex has raced for more than a decade starting on mountain bikes with the university cycling club in her hometown, Oxford - the cycle capitol of the UK. Odd as it is that a place so flat would lead Bex to XC and mountain bike racing, still she competed at Expert and Elite levels racking up a multitude of podium placings in the UK and France. From years of honing the intricate technical skills of mountain and XC cycling, this woman is more cycling savvy than just about anyone else on the road.
Bex made her debut as a cycle journalist in 1997 and has worked on many titles including Cycle Sport, Cycling Weekly and Cycling Plus magazines. She writes a lot about road biking, women-specific bikes and clothing because these are the things she knows a lot about. These days she travels the world experimenting with and writing about women's kit, bikes and superb cycling routes from the Rift Valley in Kenya to Canada's Gatineau Mountains.
As the top female cycling journalist in the UK, there's not much related to women's biking that escapes Bex. And if there's one thing she relishes more than riding her bike, it would be the great Spanish food and wine. Bex will make sure you enjoy the lunch breaks as much as the stunning scenery on your EuroCycler rides.
